On Friday, I had the opportunity to see the amazing Idina Menzel perform and meet her after her show at the Altria Theater in Richmond, VA! The show itself was amazing. I’ve seen her in concert many times before (as far back as Barefoot at the Symphony), and this was a great mixture of new songs and old favorites.

The overall feel of the show was very different from past shows I’ve attended, and I think it was because she performed so much of her own album material. I loved watching her perform songs from idina. and play around a little bit with the arrangements of some of the classics, like combining “Defying Gravity” with “Wind Beneath My Wings”.  My album favorites were definitely “Small World”, “Perfect Story” and “I Do”.  I love Frozen, so I thought the “Dear Prudence”/”Do You Want To Build A Snowman” mashup was particularly inventive and a cool way to reach all of her fan segments. I also loved her encore, where she performed “I See You” and “Every Time We Say Goodbye”. She spoke about the importance of actually being seen and told the audience about a Zulu greeting that means “I see you” and the response, “I am here”.

After the show, I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to see her! I met her briefly at her album signing in September and she remembered me, which surprised me! She signed my program as I rambled and I brought up her upcoming role in SKINTIGHT. She mentioned that it’s a small thing (the theater seats about 400 people) and said “I won’t be singing!” lol.  She also took some time to sign four copies of idina. so that I could give them away to a few of you lucky fans! Idina Menzel is heading back to the stage! Idina will appear in “Skintight,” a comic drama by Joshua Harmon (“Bad Jews,” “Significant Other”), as part of a limited Off-Broadway engagement. “Skintight” is described as “a scorching examination of beauty, youth and sex.” Idina has been involved with the production since the first reading in January 2015. Here’s a description:

Reeling from her ex-husband’s engagement to a much younger woman, Jodi Isaac (Idina Menzel) turns to her famous fashion-designer dad for support. Instead, she finds him wrapped up in his West Village townhouse with Trey. Who’s 20. And not necessarily gay. But probably an adult film star. At least, according to Jodi’s son. Who’s also 20. And definitely gay. “Skintight” assays the nature of love, the power of attraction, and the ways in which a superficial culture persists in teaching its children that all that matters is what’s on the inside.

“Skintight”, which is a Roundabout Theater production, will begin performances on May 24, 2018 at the Laura Pels Theatre and open officially on June 21, 2018. The play is scheduled to run through Aug. 26, 2018.

Exciting news! Idina Menzel’s Beaches will be released on DVD on May 9!  Idina and Nia Long star as two very different women who share an unexpected friendship that, even with its ups and downs, lasts for decades. This new version of the 1988 film includes Idina’s performances of iconic songs from the original movie such as “Wind Beneath My Wings” and “The Glory of Love,” in addition to Idina’s original song, “Last Time.” The Beaches DVD will be available at Walmart for the suggested retail price of $14.98.
