{"id":101,"date":"2015-08-03T01:47:52","date_gmt":"2015-08-03T01:47:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.idina-here.com\/press\/wp\/?p=101"},"modified":"2015-10-22T21:54:51","modified_gmt":"2015-10-22T21:54:51","slug":"glee-star-menzel-urges-caution-over-tv-talent-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.idina-here.com\/press\/glee-star-menzel-urges-caution-over-tv-talent-shows\/","title":{"rendered":"Glee star Menzel urges caution over TV talent shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Menzel can currently be seen in the third season of TV\u2019s Glee<\/p>\n<p>Glee and Wicked star Idina Menzel has urged caution over the recent practice of using TV talent shows to find West End leads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they just pick someone out of nowhere, they might sound great but they don\u2019t know how to do it every day,\u201d she says ahead of a solo concert at London\u2019s Royal Albert Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Menzel created the role of green-skinned witch Elphaba in Broadway hit Wicked and went on to launch the West End production.<\/p>\n<p>She also worked with one of the hopefuls on BBC One show I\u2019d Do Anything in 2008, in which the prize was the female lead in a production of musical Oliver!<\/p>\n<p>Yet the 40-year-old Tony winner believes training and discipline are vital for a lasting career in musical theatre.<\/p>\n<p>Recent West End revivals of The Sound of Music, Grease and The Wizard of Oz also used a TV talent show to find their stars.<\/p>\n<p>Connie Fisher, winner of How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? in 2006, was forced to give up her Sound of Music role because of problems with her voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf someone wins a talent show and they\u2019re incredibly talented, they deserve to be up there \u2013 provided they can see it through,\u201d Menzel says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoing eight shows a week takes a lot of technique and experience on how to pace yourself. That\u2019s where the discipline comes in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year Menzel was seen on TV\u2019s The Glee Project, mentoring contestants competing for roles in the third series of Glee.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.idina-here.com\/press\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/2011_09_30_b.jpg\" alt=\"2011_09_30_b\" width=\"304\" height=\"171\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.idina-here.com\/press\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/2011_09_30_b.jpg 304w, https:\/\/www.idina-here.com\/press\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/2011_09_30_b-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 304px) 100vw, 304px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Phenomenon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The actress is also reprising her role as Shelby Corcoran on the show.<\/p>\n<p>Glee, about high school students involved in a performing arts group, has been an international phenomenon, spawning chart success and tours.<\/p>\n<p>According to Menzel, it has also fostered a new respect for theatre performers, actors previously marginalised on US TV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor so long you couldn\u2019t put music and sing on a television show. People would just laugh at it,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut with people who can really sing, who can show up and do it every night, you can really see the difference. Whether people realise it or not, that\u2019s what\u2019s drawing them to the show<br \/>\n\u201cGlee is educating people about the kind of hard work that goes into that, and making them appreciate theatre people more than maybe we usually are [appreciated].<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like being in surroundings with people that are familiar with and respect the theatre.
