Just hours before the second episode of \u201cGlee\u2019s\u201d second season hits the airwaves, Zap2it talked with Idina Menzel, who returns Tuesday (Sept. 27) as Shelby Corcoran, erstwhile Vocal Adrenalin coach, Rachel\u2019s (Lea Michele\u2019s) birth mother and adoptive mother of Quinn\u2019s (Dianna Agron\u2019s) baby.<\/p>\n
Without giving away too much, let\u2019s just say Menzel will be around McKinley High for a while since she\u2019s signed on as a teacher. In Tuesday\u2019s episode \u2014 \u201cI Am Unicorn\u201d \u2014 she sings a heart-wrenching duet of \u201cWest Side Story\u2019s\u201d \u201cSomewhere\u201d with Rachel and does her best to blend in although (as will be made clear in the episode) she\u2019s bound to shake things up a bit.<\/p>\n
Outside of \u201cGlee,\u201d Menzel is keeping busy with a tour \u2014 she\u2019ll be playing Los Angeles\u2019 Greek Theater on Oct. 22 and is flying to London later this week for a symphony-accompanied show at the Royal Albert Hall.<\/p>\n

Do you have some idea of where your character ends up at the end of this season?<\/strong> Quinn may be waffling on her decision to give up her baby, Beth. That\u2019s serious stuff, eh?<\/strong> Any songs you\u2019re just dying to sing on \u201cGlee\u201d?<\/strong> What about show tunes?<\/strong> Who does your character identify with more: Rachel or Quinn?<\/strong> There was talk earlier this year of you having your own show in development at ABC. \nIdina Menzel: \u201cI have no idea. Are you kidding? I barely have any idea what my character is doing in the next episode. But there are good vibes on the set, everybody\u2019s working well together.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAs a mother, I can\u2019t imagine having done what I did to Lea\u2019s character. You learn that you can\u2019t judge your own characters. They may have similarities to who we are. I\u2019m just happy to be doing a really great story line and working with so many different characters on the show.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nI was telling Ryan Murphy I would love to bring back some classic Whitney Houston. Several of her songs I would love to try to do justice to. Also Olita Adams, \u201cGet Here.\u201d It\u2019s one of my favorite songs.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThey\u2019ve done \u201cRent,\u201d \u201cWicked\u201d and are touching on \u201cWest Side Story\u201d \u2014 there\u2019s some Sondheim we could do. The truth is that that\u2019s what is really terrific about the show. It\u2019s really, I think, educating the audiences on what goes into the life of someone who has an 8-shows-a-week kind of life. It\u2019s not the theater, but they can see how much work these kids are doing.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\u201cRachel\u2019s my daughter, but Quinn\u2019s more of a bada**. The person who wants to be a star in me is obviously passed on in Rachel, but there\u2019s a real regret in the character for giving up her child so she\u2019s going to have a lot in common with Quinn and that anger and resentment.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\u201cYes, absolutely, but it\u2019s been put on hold now. It\u2019s sort of based on my own experience as a wedding singer when I was 15-16 years old and the idea that I never got out of there and that\u2019s what I kept doing. But right now I\u2019m trying to focus on my son and \u2018Glee.’\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
