Is it any wonder that Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs son, Walker, has the gift of song and dance?<\/p>\n
Diggs told me in March that the little one was already taking music lessons at 17 months. \u201cHe\u2019s definitely singing a lot more\u2014and a lot of times in tune, I have to say,\u201d Menzel told me earlier today. \u201cBut the biggest thing though is dancing. I know all little kids dance, but it\u2019s pretty awesome dancing.\u201d<\/p>\n
Walker isn\u2019t even two yet. That happens on Sept. 2. So what do mom and dad have planned for the big day?<\/p>\n
\u201cTaye said, \u2018Can we please do something smaller this year?\u2019 Because last year was his first birthday and all family and everybody is around,\u201d Menzel told me during a break from filming her return to Glee (more on that later from my pals over at Watch With Kristin). \u201cHe said, \u2018Can we have something with just a few kids?\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cI was like, \u2018Of course. It\u2019s Labor Day, no one is probably going to come,’\u201d she continued. \u201cMeanwhile, there are 20 kids coming. [laughs] We\u2019re going to have a Lightning McQueen bouncy castle in the backyard and then probably just have some bagels for the parents.\u201d<\/p>\n
But they have couple of weeks before that. They\u2019ll be in New York City this weekend for Camp BroaderWay, their 10-day program they launched this summer for inner-city girls.<\/p>\n
More than 30 children participated. On Sunday, they\u2019ll perform at the Miller Theater at Columbia University. \u201cThe cool thing about it is it\u2019s all written and inspired by these girls\u2014it\u2019s their lyrics, their poems [and] their choreography,\u201d Menzel said.<\/p>\n
Menzel, who won a Tony for her work in Wicked, launched the program because she knows how lucky she was to go to camp when she was a child growing up on Long Island. \u201cI thought our mission was one thing, but now I\u2019m realizing it\u2019s not necessarily about a girl getting in toe shoes,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s about empowerment and self-esteem.
