Fake fur and \u2018Frozen 2\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\nThe native New Yorker hadn\u2019t yet chosen her Minneapolis outfit when we talked. But she had an idea in mind for her stylist.<\/p>\n
\u201cFind me the biggest, fakest fur coat you can find that looks stylish and keeps me warm.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then she reiterated: \u201cMake sure you got that right. I said fake fur.\u201d<\/p>\n
Actually, she said \u201cfakest,\u201d but we get the point.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll be fat but I\u2019ll be warm,\u201d she giggled.<\/p>\n
One aspect of her outfit Menzel is certain about: She won\u2019t go barefoot, as she is known to do at her concerts. In fact, her 2011 PBS special was titled \u201cBarefoot at the Symphony.\u201d<\/p>\n
Menzel will not stick around to attend the Super Bowl at U.S. Bank Stadium. Her commitments revolve around the schedule of her 8-year-old son, Walker. Anyway, she sang the national anthem at the 2015 Super Bowl.<\/p>\n
Her son is particular about engaging with Mom\u2019s career. For instance, he didn\u2019t want to see \u201cOlaf\u2019s Frozen Adventure,\u201d last fall\u2019s 21-minute animated film featuring Mom that is a bridge or promo to \u201cFrozen 2.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMy son is a little protective … if that\u2019s the word. Territorial. Possessive,\u201d she explained. \u201c\u2009\u2018Frozen\u2019 is Mom\u2019s job and it steals me away from him. And that\u2019s how he relates to it right now.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s starting to see how cool his mom is,\u201d continued Menzel. \u201cHe\u2019s just getting into music. He would like to come [to Minneapolis] to see Prince\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n
Menzel has had a varied and successful career in different arenas. Not only did she win a Tony for playing Elphaba in \u201cWicked,\u201d but she has recorded six albums under her own name, appeared in various TV programs including \u201cGlee\u201d and a 2017 remake of the movie \u201cBeaches\u201d and, of course, sang the 2014 Oscar- and Grammy-winning \u201cLet It Go\u201d for the animated sensation \u201cFrozen.\u201d<\/p>\n
But it seems all that anyone wants to talk to her about these days is \u201cFrozen 2,\u201d the sequel due in late 2019. She will reprise her role of Elsa.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just started working on it a couple months ago,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re still piecing the story together and refining it. There\u2019s not too much I can reveal about it other than I think it\u2019s pretty special. We\u2019re not doing it just to do a sequel. They\u2019re putting their heart and soul into it. They\u2019re deepening the characters, and I\u2019m excited about that.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe haven\u2019t recorded any of the music yet. Usually they get the script in order and they start filling in with the songs. It\u2019s sort of a chicken-and-egg kind of thing. The song takes the place of a scene and they turn down the dialogue or vice versa. It\u2019s a fascinating process.\u201d<\/p>\n
So don\u2019t expect Menzel to let go of any \u201cFrozen 2\u201d nuggets while she gets frozen on Nicollet Mall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
