Idina Menzel struck a victorious pose as she launched into \u201cDon\u2019t Rain on My Parade,\u201d the opening number of her winning concert at Starlight Theatre on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

After enduring a rain delay of 30 minutes, the members the audience of more than 3,000 were warned by Menzel to \u201cget ready for me because I\u2019m a comer.\u201d<\/p>\n

She certainly is. By beginning her two-hour performance with a song from the 1964 musical \u201cFunny Girl,\u201d Menzel, 46, intimated that she\u2019s the Barbra Streisand of her generation.<\/p>\n

A star on Broadway and a pervasive presence in film and television productions, Menzel verified that she and her spectacular voice are equally impressive in concert settings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Menzel made a name for herself in the musical \u201cRent\u201d in what she said was \u201cmy very first professional gig\u201d in the \u201990s. She recalled that \u201cwe knew we doing something cool, but we didn\u2019t have any idea what kind of reaction it would have.\u201d<\/p>\n

She hit a high note on a vibrant version of the momentous musical\u2019s \u201cSeasons of Love\u201d that seemed capable of shattering the video screens on either side of the stage. A sentimental reading of \u201cNo Day but Today\u201d was topped only by the appearance of Menzel\u2019s signature song.<\/p>\n

As the opening strains of \u201cLet It Go\u201d were played by a nine-piece band, groggy children who had been waiting 90 minutes for the moment snapped to attention.<\/p>\n

They knew that Menzel voiced the character of Elsa in the 2013 animated movie \u201cFrozen.\u201d About three dozen kids joined Menzel on the stage for several choruses of the film\u2019s \u201cLet It Go.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Menzel fretted that \u201cI\u2019m afraid your parents will hate me even more than they do\u201d by indulging her young fans on the overly familiar ditty, their adorably enthusiastic singing was heart-melting.<\/p>\n

Many adults had a similarly cathartic reaction to \u201cDefying Gravity,\u201d a stirring composition Menzel first sang as the green-skinned Elpha in the original production of the 2003 musical \u201cWicked.\u201d She also touched on rock, R&B, pop and cabaret during Wednesday\u2019s fast-paced show.<\/p>\n

Menzel caught herself before finishing a racy anecdote by noting that \u201cthere are kids in the audience.\u201d She explained that she\u2019s sometimes challenged to please both the little girls and the gay men that comprise her two core constituencies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI play a Disney princess but I\u2019m actually a queen,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
