You\u2019ve probably heard Idina Menzel\u2019s voice somewhere. It\u2019s also likely, however, that you\u2019ve only ever heard Menzel\u2019s voice in character<\/em>.<\/p>\n

As the actress behind Elsa in Disney\u2019s \u201cFrozen,\u201d Elphaba in the musical sensation \u201cWicked\u201d and Maureen Johnson in the original Broadway staging of \u201cRent,\u201d Menzel has enjoyed decades of success on the stage and screen.<\/p>\n

But this summer, the vocal powerhouse is stepping out of character for her official concert tour, which stops at Redmond\u2019s Marymoor Park on Tuesday, Aug. 22.<\/p>\n

A prolific singer-songwriter, Menzel has, to date, released five studio albums, the latest of which she\u2019s in the midst of promoting nationwide.<\/p>\n

Asked to describe the sound of her most recent record, the self-titled \u201cidina.,\u201d Menzel says it\u2019s difficult to articulate. \u201cSome songs are more piano-based, some are more acoustic guitar,\u201d says Menzel during a recent telephone conversation. \u201cBut it\u2019s all, you know \u2014 Oh God! It\u2019s hard to describe your own music!\u201d<\/p>\n

Thematically, though, Menzel says \u201cidina.\u201d focuses a lot on relationships and starting over, an unintentional by-product of her 2014 split from \u201cRent\u201d co-star Taye Diggs. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of music about relationships and trying to, you know, overcome, sort of to empower myself to find a better day and to start again, to start new, because I was \u2026 going through a divorce at the time,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

With her original music, Menzel says she hopes to reach a bigger audience. \u201cAnd if not, I just do it because I love to do it, and I learn more about myself. And it\u2019s just another part of my artistic expression,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Menzel expresses a similar self-effacement when explaining why, over the years, she hasn\u2019t been a consistent presence on film or television despite meaty roles in movies like \u201cEnchanted\u201d and a recurring gig on TV\u2019s \u201cGlee.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh no, I just take what I can get, man,\u201d Menzel laughs. \u201cPeople always think you can pick and choose every job.<\/p>\n

\u201cI still go and audition for TV pilots or films and that\u2019s OK. It keeps me humble,\u201d she adds. \u201cIf there\u2019s anything that\u2019s eluded me it\u2019s just that I\u2019d like to do more of that work, with some incredible actors that I could learn even more from \u2026 I still feel like a rookie in that sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Menzel\u2019s tour comes to an end in September, she\u2019ll head back into the studio, this time to record dialogue and music for 2018\u2019s \u201cFrozen 2.\u201d Recording commenced a few weeks back, according to co-star Jonathan Groff, so details are scarce.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Can we at least expect another earthshaking showstopper like \u201cLet It Go\u201d from Menzel?<\/p>\n
