Idina Menzel & Chaka Khan Team Up For CARE’s “I’m Every Woman” Campaign

Idina Menzel and Chaka Khan are celebrating International Women’s Day with a remake of “I’m Every Woman”! They recorded the track as part of global humanitarian organization CARE’s #IMEVERYWOMAN International Women’s Day campaign. The duo appeared on TODAY to discuss the track and Idina looked so thrilled to be recording with one of her idols! Stream “I’m Every Woman” now on Spotify!

Idina had this to say about the project in a statement:

“I am so thrilled to be a part of this hopeful celebration of strength for International Women’s Day. Our version of ‘I’m Every Woman’ is a beautiful recognition of the power in every woman, especially the heroes on the frontlines who have been working tirelessly this past year to keep us safe and healthy. I know that when we support women, they are truly changemakers for their communities — 2020 proved that beyond a doubt. I hope that you will join me in supporting women and girls around the world and CARE’s efforts to uplift them as we work to create a better world for all.”

Watch the music video, which features Idina, Chaka and cameos from activists, trailblazers, frontline heroes, artists, and incredible women from across the globe who have benefited from CARE’s programs, below!

Idina on CBS This Morning + Details on ‘The Circle of Becoming’

Idina Menzel appeared on CBS This Morning on Tuesday morning to discuss the 25th Anniversary of RENT ahead of her appearance at New York Theatre Workshop’s fundraiser, 25 YEARS OF RENT: MEASURED IN LOVE. You can watch the segment above and listen to an extended interview with Idina here. If you missed the fundraiser, streaming passes are still available for $25 until Saturday, March 6 at 8 PM.

On Tuesday Idina also participated in the American Repertory Theater’s Behind The Scenes event of a new musical project she’s working on, THE CIRCLE OF BECOMING. Idina is developing the project with writer V (formerly Eve Ensler), songwriter Justin Tranter, and director Diane Paulus. The musical is described as “a wild new musical fairy tale about a teenage girl whose determination to save the planet endows her and her friends with powers they never knew they had.” The show will tackle the topic of climate change and the role of the teenage girl’s mother is being developed for Idina. They shared a few early demos of songs they’ve written for the show and after the main event, they shared one of Idina’s songs in a special after-show discussion! The project is still in the very early stages of development. Diane Paulus shared that they have not read the work aloud yet or had any workshops and about 50% of the songs still have to be written so Idina, Justin and V will be getting together again (safely!) in the near future to write more songs. It will be fun to hopefully watch the show progress to the stage!

Tickets are $20 and there is also a pay-what-you-can option here.

On March 2, Idina will also virtually perform at New York Theatre Workshop’s fundraiser, 25 YEARS OF RENT: MEASURED IN LOVE. This mostly pre-recorded event will air at 8 PM and will be available to stream on-demand through March 6th at 8pm EST. Tickets are $25 and you can buy them here.

At some point this year, Idina will also participate in NY PopsUp, an unprecedented and expansive festival featuring hundreds of live pop-up performances (many of which are free of charge and all open to the public) that will intersect with the daily lives of New Yorkers. The events are meant for a “handful” of audience members and typically won’t be announced in advance, but you can follow along on their social media pages to try and catch Idina’s performance. Performances will run through Labor Day.

Idina’s Treehouse Premiere!

The first episode of Idina’s Treehouse is here! The adorable iPhone shot series features story time, a song, and Idina’s friends, Aunt Cara (her sister!), Farmer Scott, and Mrs. Roper!

Idina said the following in a statement to Variety: “Just something I started working on during quarantine. Hope you all like it. In search of a little peace and quiet during lockdown and stressful homeschooling, I took refuge in my son Walker’s treehouse. Started talking and singing to myself. Delirium? Stir crazy? Mother gone mad? I offer up myself for your children’s amusement.”
